University Impact Rankings 2019 has been released by Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking in order to assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The first global ranking to measure institutions’ social and economic impact has topped by the University of Auckland. It was followed by Canada’s McMaster University which secured the second spot, the University of British Columbia and the University of Manchester, UK shared the third spot.
Most of our home-based institutes were ranked in 300+ category out of 450 participants and none of the Indian universities made it to the list of top-100 ‘impactful’ varsities. The mainstream IITs, IIMs and IISc, the usual ranking institutes from India were not on the list. The top entrant from India was JSS Academy of Higher Education and research between 101-200 range. This is followed by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeeth in the bracket of 201-300. The other Indian institutes which are all in the above-301+ bracket are:
- Annamalai University
- Christ University Bengaluru
- IIT-Bhubaneswar
- Jamia Milia Islamia
- KIIT University
- KLE University
- Manipal Academy of Higher education
- Pondicherry University
- PSG College of Technology
Indian institutes such as Pondicherry University performed comparatively better with leading the list by securing a slot in 101-200 bracket in the gender equality category. Around 450 universities from 76 countries were assessed under the process. The criteria considered were:
- Good health and well-being
- Gender equality
- Quality education
- Industry innovation and infrastructure among others
