The University of Liverpool is set to launch its first independent international campus in Bengaluru by July 2026, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes identical in content and quality to those at its UK campus. This move marks a significant milestone in UK-India educational collaboration, with Liverpool becoming one of the earliest global universities to receive full regulatory approval under India’s new international education policy.
Why India, Why Now?
With over 1,000 Indian postgraduates joining Liverpool annually, the university sees its India campus as catering to students who seek top-tier international education without relocating abroad.
“This isn’t about replacing the UK experience,” Jones explained. “This is for students who prefer to study in India but still want a degree that’s globally recognised.”
The India campus is not expected to deter outbound students, but instead expand Liverpool’s educational reach. According to Jones, the move reflects a growing demand for high-quality, locally accessible global education.
Assured Global Recognition & Seamless Mobility
The university confirmed that degrees awarded in Bengaluru will carry the same global recognition as those from the UK campus. Students will also have options to transfer to Liverpool or participate in short-term mobility programmes.
“There will be flexibility. We’ll announce full details of mobility and credit transfers in the coming months,” said Jones.
Initial Course Offerings & Campus Vision
Admissions will begin in 2026 with programs in high-demand fields such as:
- Computer Science
- Artificial Intelligence
- Data Science
- Business Management
- Accounting and Finance
- Biomedical Sciences
- Games Design
The campus aims to host 5,000 students in five years, and scale up to 10,000 within a decade. On-campus accommodation will also be available.
Faculty, Industry Linkages & Research Focus
The academic staff will be a mix of Indian faculty and select members from Liverpool’s UK team, prioritising local talent while maintaining international standards.
“It’s not about parachuting in foreign faculty. We’ll blend local expertise with Liverpool’s academic rigor,” said Jones.
Strong industry collaboration is also on the agenda. The university will build partnerships with Indian companies and institutions — including existing ties with NIMHANS and AIIMS — replicating successful models from the UK where it works with firms like Unilever and AstraZeneca.
Affordability, Scholarships & Sustainable Learning
Acknowledging affordability concerns, Jones promised competitive pricing and scholarship options.
“We’re mindful of cost sensitivity in India and will ensure transparency around fees and financial aid,” he noted.
Sustainability will also be integrated across the curriculum, not just as standalone courses but within disciplines like AI and biomedical sciences.
A Vision for a World-Class Academic Hub
Drawing inspiration from the university’s successful joint venture in China — the Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University with 27,000+ students — the Bengaluru campus will operate as a fully independent Liverpool entity.
“This will be more than an academic outpost. It’ll be a research-active, industry-linked institution and a magnet for talent,” Jones concluded.
As India opens its doors to international institutions, the University of Liverpool’s Bengaluru campus could set a benchmark for globally respected education made accessible at home.
