The depth of change in teaching and learning in the last two years has been breath-taking. The COVID-19 pandemic proved to be the ultimate black swan event spelling out the “tech or die” message to the education industry. Thomson Digital, with a 50 years legacy in processing educational content, organised a virtual roundtable meeting inviting principals from school across Delhi NCR to talk about the innovation in ed-tech space and ‘Role of technology in learning & assessment’.
The discussion highlighting that the adoption of technology amongst educators and teachers, in India, is moving at a slower pace than expected. Therefore, the uptake of the technology solutions is slowing down in its effectiveness. However, technological advances, relevant online curriculums for students, provision of adequate facilities, and their contributing factors in the field of education have been extensively discussed. The roundtable also shed light on how the educational community need to take steps toward bridging the gap in terms of accessibility of technology, especially in the rural areas, and contribute towards making the education system in India better.
The session was moderated by Mr Aman Singh, Advisor, Thomson Digital. The participants of the roundtable comprised of Dr. Rajeev Ranjan Singh, Principal, MCIS, Mr Raghavv Sharrma, Director, Bhai Parmanand Vidya Mandir, Dr. Bhawana Malik, Director Principal, Lovely Public Sr. Secondary School, Dr. Anju Mahrotra, Director and Principal, Kalka Public School and Ms. Krishna Singh, Principal, Shanti Niketan World School.
Addressing the participants, Aman Singh, Advisor, Thomson Digital said, “Education in India and worldwide has experienced a massive shift during the pandemic. The honourable Prime Minister of India referred to technology as the “basis of the future of India” in the National Education Policy 2020. With changing scenarios, it is vital to understand how technology can be leveraged in the right direction to be a support to the overall education system.”
As technology advances, educators are in dire need of training so that they can be better equipped with the new methods that are coming up all over the world. While, Ms. Krishna Singh, Principal, Shanti Niketan World School suggested that parents should be trained alongside teachers so that they have an understanding of the implications of technology in education, Dr. Rajeev Ranjan Singh, Principal, MCIS, explained how he took great advantage of technology in the learning and assessment process in his school. The experts further emphasised the need for an accessible learning management system, the creation of engaging, immersive learning experiences, linking peer learners to create strong learning communities, and synchronised, experiential learning by blending online education with physical mode (phygital).
