The HRD Ministry has finally been successful in taking President Ram Nath Kovind’s approval on the selection of the Vice Chancellor for Visva Bharati. The university that was set up by Rabindranath Tagore was running without a VC since 2016.
Sushanta Duttagupta who was then the VC of the university was sacked on the grounds of irregularities by the then HRD minister Smriti Irani.
Bidyut Chakraborty who teaches at the DU’s Political Science department and holds a Ph.D from the London School of Economics was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the esteemed and one of the oldest academic institutions of the country.
“The President has given his approval for Bidyut Chakraborty’s appointment. An official order will be issued soon”, said a source.
However, when contacted, Chakraborty said that he has no clue about the news on his appointment.
The President had earlier scrapped a panel of names that were submitted for the post by the Prakash Javadekar led HRD ministry.
