The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has achieved a remarkable milestone by filing 152 Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in 2024, marking the highest number of filings in a single year for the institute. This achievement continues a four-year trend of sustained growth in innovation, as noted in a statement released by the institute.
To date, IIT Kanpur has filed a total of 1,200 IPRs, with an exceptional licensing rate to industry partners, achieving approximately 12.91 per cent in 2024 alone. This year’s filings comprise 124 patents, 10 design registrations, two copyrights, and six trademark applications. The institute also extended its global footprint with seven US patents, two Chinese patents, and one European patent.
The 2024 filings span diverse domains such as medtech and nanotechnology, showcasing innovations like a transdermal drug-delivery patch, Kryptoceler for cryptographic acceleration, and a hybrid-powered electric tower car. Other inventions include a chop saw metal-cutting machine and a tool for measuring crack growth contactlessly.
Additionally, 217 previously filed IPRs were granted this year, including breakthroughs like a smart electric meter, a portable medical suction device, and a quadcopter drone with an advanced folding mechanism. The institute also launched two pioneering products: the Air Sampling Device and the Metamaterial Cloaking System.
Recognised for its impactful technology transfer activities, IIT Kanpur received the STEM Impact Awards 2024 for the third time, specifically for the transfer of the ‘Haptic Smart Watch for Blind & Visually Impaired,’ which has driven significant socio-economic benefits.
