Why international education is a must – various factors involved in acing overseas education

-Authored Article by Mr. John Laxon, Regional Director – South, South-East Asia, Education New Zealand

Why international education is a must – various factors involved in acing overseas education

An international education is no longer an optional trend, butan expectation of successful employers and students across the world. With increasingly connected global supply changes, customer markets and technology platforms, employers are expecting that graduates have proven experience in working across cultures and in a variety of learning and research environments. This is reflected through increasing numbers of students enrolling in universities abroad. Indian students are leaders in this trend, established as one of the largest international student cohorts globally. Indian students recognise that an international education provides a life-changing experience and a competitive edge over their peers in a highly-competitive job market.

Studying internationally opens a new array of opportunities for students. It gives them a chance to experience another country with a new outlook, different customs and a varied culture. Most students who benefit from an international education claim that their time overseas is the most memorable period of their life.As students are exposed to new people, places and opportunities they end up creating lasting memories and developing life-long friendships which later turn into networking opportunities for the future.

So when considering an international education, why consider New Zealand?

Future-Proofing careers

New Zealand’s education system has gained the top global ranking for delivering a future-focused education in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2017 Worldwide Educating for the Future Index.

The FutureIndex measures how countries provide young people with the skills they need to flourish in the future. These include interdisciplinary, creative and analytical skills, and entrepreneurial and leadership skills.Specifically, it highlights the importance of an inquiry-based approach to learning, industry collaboration and the need for technology-rich curricula. New Zealand performs well on these scores, in particular due to the curriculum framework, high quality teacher education and the country’s cultural diversity and tolerance.

We have a high-performing tertiary sector. All eight New Zealand universities are ranked among the top 2.5 percent of universities in the QS World University Rankings 2018. Our institutes of technology and polytechnics also offer a wide range of highly practical, vocational programmes, with strong links to industry. New Zealand education particularly excels in areas that combine technology and creativity – such as the sciences, building and architecture, engineering, filmmaking and design.

New Zealand ranks third for global creativity (out of 139 countries) according to the 2015 Global Creativity Index. This is why the New Zealand education brand is ‘Think New’ – we’re a country with a new way of looking at the world. Our students are encouraged to take a fresh perspective to problem-solving, and our classrooms, labs and lecture halls instill students with a willingness to question, and to deliver new and creative solutions.

Learning from diverse cultures

New Zealand in its true sense is also a country where diversity is greater than most European countries, welcoming more than 120,000 international students from over 180 countries. There is a greater understanding and appreciation of people and history. New Zealand offers considerable opportunities to witness new ways of life and learn the local language among other cultural experiences. With a new perspective on culture, language skills, a great education, and a willingness to learn, students will prove to be an asset to their employer.

Making the most of the overseas Education destination/ When studying in a new place, why not make the best of the situation and feel more at home?

A new country offers new activities and interests that could further turn into an undiscovered hobby. New Zealand as a country is a great enabling destination for the youth as it offers a wide range of adventure activities from hiking, water sports, bungee jumping or various other new sports for the all dare devils out there.New Zealand is the perfect answer to the people who love to be outdoors and crave some thrill and excitement. Along with enjoying adventure, students are further encouraged to enroll in the outdoor education courses offered at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels.

Comprehensive programmes that compliment your skills

With a higher level of education, students tend to be trained to become work-ready to battle everyday challenges that they may face in the corporate world.New Zealand offers the necessary qualifications and courses that will enable students to excel anywhere in the world in their chosen career path. New Zealand universities offer work ready programmesthat are created keeping in mind international students, which helps the student gain the right amount of knowledge, confidence and experience they need for a successful job search.

Opportunity to be a Global student

International Education is like an investment of a lifetime. Not only do you gain value knowledge but also other worldly experiences that can have a major impact on your overall personality. Some might even say that this is the new way of education. Students must get away from their sheltered life, venture out into the new world and experience all that life offers first hand. The student who gets to experience the privilege of an international education are sensitized about current world issues and hence have gained better understanding of their global environment.
