The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) announced the rankings on Thursday.
While several universities slipped down in the overall ranking category by ten places, some universities marginally improved its ranking.
Of all, IIT-Madras retained its dominant position by getting ranked as No 1 engineering college in India.
HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said, “IIT Madras retains the first rank followed by IISc, Bangalore. IIT Delhi has been ranked #3 in the Overall Category. I congratulate all the top three institutes and I also encourage all the other institutes who participated to continue their good work.”

Further, Shri. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said, “We will create an enabling situation when institutes from across the world will want to be la part of the Indian NIRF Rankings. Our ‘Study in India’ initiative is working to bring international students to India. This year, 3,800 Institutes participated in NIRF Rankings, which is 20% higher than last year.”
Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras that stayed as a top college commented on the achievement.
He said, “We are delighted to maintain our top position for the fifth time running and ever since the NIRF rankings were launched. This is the result of the excellent work of our faculty, students and staff, and we look forward to continue on the path of excellence in the coming years and make a mark nationally and internationally.”
Here’s the list of Top 20 colleges in India that have been ranked according to the categories of “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcome,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception.”

Of top 20, IIT Guwahati ranked improved its score in overall ranking. Last year institute stood at 9th with a score of 65.47 while this year it stood at 7th with 68.81.
On the other hand, IIT Hyderabad too improved with its ranking. It attained #17 in ‘Overall’ category, compared with Rank #22 last year in NIRF.
One of the most significant observation that came out was Bihar’s poor performance. None of the state universities or colleges figured in the overall list of top 100 institutions. The only institution that was present in the overall list was IIT, Patna, ranked 54th.

Top Law School: The NIRF Ranking for Law Schools saw NLSIU (National Law School of India University) Bangalore on the top.
Top Medical Institution: All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi topped in the country with a score of 90.69.

Top College for Architecture: IIT Kharagpur
Top Institution for Pharma Studies: Jamia Hamdard
Top Management Institution: IIM Ahmedabad
Best University: Indian Institute of Science
Best Engineering Institution: IIM Madras
