Read moreThe University Grants Commission has warned the public about fake online programs that use abbreviations resembling those of accredited degrees, according to officials. They specifically highlighted a flagging “10-day MBA” course. Manish Joshi, the Secretary of the University Grants Commission (UGC) said that some individuals or organizations are offering online programs and courses with abbreviated forms similar to which the attention of commission has been drawn is a “10 Days MBA” .
He also said that the specific details of a degree, such as its abbreviated form, duration, and entry requirements, are specified by the UGC with the previous approval of the central government through the publication of an notification in the official gazette.
The UGC secretary further clarified that only a university established under a central, provincial, or state act, institutions deemed to be universities, or institutions authorized by an act of Parliament, has the right to confer a degree.
Joshi mentioned that higher education institutions must also secure approval from the UGC to provide any online degree programs in terms of the UGC regulations. A list of recognized higher education institutions authorized to offer online programs, along with the approved online programs, can be found at deb.ugc.ac.in. He further said that stakeholders therefore advised to ascertain the validity of an online program before applying or taking any admission to online program.
