In a written reply to a query made by Shiv Sena MLA Vilas Potnis, Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde said that the state government is mulling over making Marathi compulsory for Class I to Class X.
Potnis had questioned that while other Indian states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Kerala have made their respective local languages mandatory for their students, what is the Maharashtra state government doing about making Marathi a compulsory language for school students.
The minister said that the proposal is being considered by the state government.
Speaking to the members of the press, the education minister has said that making Marathi compulsory is ‘difficult”.
