To collaborate in the field of standardization and conformity assessment a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. A Centre of Excellence in the field of Standardization, Testing and Conformity Assessment with the BIS branding at IIT-Delhi campus will be set up which was agreed under the MOU. IIT-Delhi director V. Ramgopal Rao and director general (DG), BIS, Surina Rajan have signed the MOU.
Infrastructure support for research and development projects of relevance to standardization will be developed by IIT-Delhi and financial support to IIT- Delhi for the R&D will be provided by BIS. Organizing training and short-term education programmes on standardization and conformity assessment and explore the possibility of the hiring of IIT Delhi faculty as consultants on a secondment basis will also be jointly handled by both the institutes.
Topics on standardization in the academic courses will be introduced by IIT-Delhi and BIS will provide inputs. There should be active involvement of technical institutes such as IITs in elevating India’s position from ‘standard takers’ to ‘standard makers’ has been said by Rajan.
