The Gates Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program is one of the well-known scholarships with benefiting 1000 new scholars each year since its inception in 1999. This 1.6 billion dollar initiative is fund granted by Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. The scholarship covers the entire expenses of students selected including their tuition and accommodation fees.
The website of the GMS program reads, “Our goal is to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential by reducing financial barriers, increasing minority representations, and developing a diversified cadre of future leaders.”
Factors considered while selecting GMS Scholarship Students
Each application of the student is evaluated in terms of student application, a nominator form and a recommender form. Students are also assessed on the basis of academic achievements, community service they performed, and the leadership potential.
The availability of scholarship
The scholarship usually begins in February, where independent readers complete an individualized assessment and they are notified of selections in the month of March.
The Scholarship is available to incoming freshman students who completed the application process and been selected as Gates Scholar prior to entering college.
