Finance Minister of Kerala, KN Balagopal stated that rupees 10 crores has been allocated for students whose education has been disrupted due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The department of Non-Resident Kerala Affairs is supposed to prepare a data bank of Malayalee students who had been studying at Ukraine.
He also mentioned that the government will co-operate with students who have lost their certificates and other important documents. Oommen Chandy, two time former chief minister of Kerala, requested Pinarayi Vijayan, the ruling chief minister of Kerala, to accommodate all students in Kerala colleges, who had to leave Ukraine in a hurried state. The Chief Minister informed that there were about 3000 students from Kerala who were studying medicine at various colleges in Ukraine.
“In Karnataka, the universities have agreed to accommodate students coming from Ukraine and that’s a model that the Kerala government can replicate,” Chandy stated. Chandy and Vijayan also discussed how the government could help students who had hefty student loans to pay.
“Since the state government alone might not be able to do anything, the help of the Central Government should be sought. And for that if there is a need, an all-party delegation from the state should meet and urge the Prime Minister to write-off the educational loans,” Chandy stated.
