Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has for the first time in India started a gender-neutral hostel in its Devanar campus in Mumabi. This is the first hostel set up in India after the Supreme Court of India read down Section 377 as null and void.
The hostel’s establishment is the result of a long drawn student campaign by Queer Collective, which is an informal student body that advocates a safe space for LGBTQ+ students as well as the management.
The cultural secretary of TISS student’s federation Akunth expressed his happiness over the establishment of same hostel for men and women.
About 17 students have already joined in the gender-neutral rooms located at the ground floor in the ladies hostel.
