Female teachers of government schools of Punjab will be undergoing self-defense training under the order passed by the Director General School Education. The teachers will then go on to train girl students.
The self-defense training sessions start from 9th April, 2018 at RICM in sector-32 of Chandigarh and will continue till 18th April, 2018. The first phase of the training will include 1,155 teachers, most of whom are physical education lectures and trainers.
The order mentions that the training will be conducted for teachers aged 50 or less. The decision for the ten-day teacher training has been taken keeping in mind security concerns for teachers as well as students. After their training, teachers will be expected to impart the same to girls from classes 6 to 12.
Prashant Goyal, Director General of School Education, Punjab said that earlier they were training girls of classes 9 and 10 only, to ensure their safety. They have now decided to train all girls from 6 to 12 in self-defense. He stated, “However, before that we thought this training is equally important for teachers. Hence, the decision has been taken to train them too.”
